The Last Warning

History of Velatem. Elemental Magic. Dragon Politics.

More pointless classes that she had to attend as the tutors tried to pretend everything was fine. Nothing was fine. The Fire Stone was still missing, the thief was still at large and the dragons were more restless than ever.

It had been an entire week since she had talked to Coal, an entire week since there had been any kind of lead and she was exhausted from relentless training that was starting to seem futile. Ash was more positive about it. She had been starting to fly as a dragon and was able to get an entire foot off the ground before having a panic attack but for her, it wasn’t good enough. She had to be able to ace her flying and a few feet wasn’t anywhere close.

The bell rung and Kessi left the classroom. She had no idea what subject it had been, she hadn’t even bothered to bring her bag or books for it. She wanted to do more than sit in class and learn about things that were pointless to her end game. She already knew Dragon Politics because she was stuck in the middle of it and usually the lesson centered around how much dragon gold stacked up against the other areas of the realm’s coin in the current market. She didn’t care.

The History of Velatem was always going over the same few events but mainly they talked about the same facts from when the Realm was all one open pentagram before King Carrick took over from his father and restored peace by giving creatures their own habitat and area of the realm. It made the creatures happy and that’s all that mattered but for some reason the tutor’s felt the need to revisit the event 50 million times before graduation. Again, it was very far down on her, ‘I give a shit’ list.

She needed another lead, an answer, just something, anything that indicated what the thief was planning, what their next move was.

She cringed as the alarm blared through the halls in the next second. Covering her ears, she stopped and look around like the other students were doing right before the alarm switched off and the speaker came on.

“Students of Dracones Academy. Please make your way to your dorms. Senior staff and guardians, go to the bottom field, thank you.”

Kessi turned around and headed to the field.

When she walked over to the congregation of tutors and guardians including all the ones she had been avoiding for a week, nobody noticed. Their eyes were all focused on the field in front of them. Kessi pushed through to the front, coming to stand next to Ash. She followed his eye line to the grass.

“Last chance.” Kessi read the burnt in message still glowing, smoke billowing up from the smoldering blades of grass. Ash turned to her.

“If ever there was a reason for you to start flying, now would be it.” He whispered and she knew what he meant.
